Discover The Secrets Of Planting Grass Seed.

By Andy Zain

You will not be able to grow a fine lawn by simply visiting a seed company, making a purchase and randomly spray it in your desired area. Like any other planting process you would have to take a lot of factors into consideration. Some of these are: the area you're planting the seed in; the weather; soil structure and texture and the usual care and maintenance. Experience is gathered through experience and you will learn how to go about planting grass seed. All you need now are a few guidelines and they're here for you.

The primary objective is to know the environment to which your lawn will have to be accustomed to. Never take things for granted like: the amount of shade or sunshine in the area; whether your children play there very often; the predominant weather and the number of trees in the area. Doing a proper survey of your area will give you direction when you have to buy the seed. For example, if the area in shady you might want to cut down some trees to increase sun exposure.

With that determined it's serious business all the way. Till the soil with any implement that goes reasonably deep enough to uproot weeds and expose dormant pests. Then go on to apply herbicides to ensure that all weeds die and your grass is left with all the nutrients to itself. Remember to water the area a day before tilling so that you maintain a good soil structure that will be destroyed if tilled dry. Stones and sticks will also have to be removed in the same process during raking.

You must know the present state of the soil by carrying out a soil test. The test will show you what nutrients are lacking and what the pH levels are (acidic or alkaline). Useful information like this will then tell you what fertilizers or nutrients you must add or remove from the soil to make sure growth is guaranteed. A soil test is as easy as going to the area and digging out random samples that you take to a soil specialist.

Planting the grass seed is the next step. For this you can use a mechanical planter or your bare hands. When using bare hands be careful not to apply too much in some areas and too little in others. Apply seed properly and rake the seeds under the soil, but not too deep into the ground. Light watering should be immediately after planting and consistently afterwards; be cautious not to dislodge any seeds.

Eventually all you'll have to do is keep watering the area until it is a healthy spread. Lastly, irregular germination will occur and the way to handle it is by extra sowing.
